About you and your business

A defining moment in my life was the year I turned 40. I realised that I wasn’t living my life how I wanted - I had lost “me” somewhere along the way. My saving grace was remembering a question I’d heard years before –“How do you want to live the second half of your life?” For me the answer was obvious – as passionately, as fully as I could!

Once I had consciously made that decision, my life started to change. I found the courage to leave a 17-year relationship, coped with being a solo mum to a 4 year old, and set up my first business as an event promoter and manager. Like many first businesses that one was doomed for financial failure! Luckily fate was on my side in the form of a wonderful mentor, who encouraged me to drop the business and really follow my heart. And so I trained as a personal life coach, and now coach others to follow their dreams and create the life they really want.

Living life passionately also led me to move to Brisbane 2 years ago, with my husband and daughter, suitcases only in hand, and ready for adventure!

What have been the highlights and challenges of your business?

One of the main challenges I’ve had is the relative newness of the coaching industry and with that, the need to educate people on coaching and the benefits it gives. I find some people are still skeptical about coaching, but luckily that trend is gradually changing, as business owners in particular, realize the huge results they can gain from having a coach to keep them on track, bounce ideas off and hold them accountable.

Re-establishing my business in Brisbane has also been a challenge for me – developing new networks and building community – a challenge that has forced me to step up and be persistent!

The highlights of my business have to be the wonderful results I’ve seen my clients accomplish, both in business and personally. Results that include successfully setting up a business for the first time, researching and buying a business, gaining more clients, landing a dream job, creating beautiful paintings, being more intimate with a partner, and finding the perfect man!

What are your 5 top tips for other MIB’s?

  1. Have a very clear vision for your business – knowing “why” you are doing your business helps you stay motivated, particularly in those moments when it all feels too hard.
  2. Know what your personal values are, those things that are the most important to you, and then bring them into your business. Your business reflects you, so create your business in a way that works for you.
  3. Write it down! Whether it’s your business goals, your marketing ideas, your weekly schedule or your to do list. The more you commit your intentions to paper, the greater the possibility of them becoming a reality.
  4. Be consistent in what you do, particularly when it comes to marketing. Consistency of action is a key step to success.
  5. Have someone to hold you accountable. This can be a friend, another MIB member, a support team or a coach. We are more likely to honour the commitments we make to others, so ensure you have someone to keep you honest and to whom you are accountable.

How has Mums in Business helped you so far?

Mums in Business is one of several network groups I belong to, and what stands out about this group is the warm welcome, and the general feeling of support for mothers running their own businesses. The combination of networking (and great morning-teas!), guest speakers and a website full of useful content and practical business information works really well.

I’ve already met some wonderful women, and through on-going conversations, shared some useful business tips. I’m looking forward to meeting many more women, exchanging ideas and continually learning from each other.

MIB is a fantastic resource and I am proud to be involved with such a committed group of women.
